Nursing School Update
I'm so sorry I haven't posted in a while. I've been busy with school and work. I'm also doing some work as a set medic with a few local indie films so I'll try to fill you in on all of that.Work is going well, I really feel like part of a team now. The nurses quiz me all the time "How many more days?!" asking about when I'll be graduating (84 days 'til pinning!). They ask me where I want to work, and that's such a hard thing to answer. I'd really like to work in the ED again, but I also need to look for a day shift. I don't want my daughter to have to go to daycare after school - I should be there for her. We've been through a lot, and I've decided that if I've spent all this time going to school to help my family, I shouldn't hurt it at the same time. I've got to do whats best for her, and not my career, so I don't know where I'll end up, as long as it's a day shift.
Winter quarter is finally over, we completed our last final yesterday and now I've got a week and a half off. I did well on the final, and passed all of my classes with 93% or better. This quarter was our 'psych' quarter, and I did clinical rotation at a HUGE world-famous hospital in the area. Best place to be, in my opinion. Two other students and I were assigned to the inpatient psych unit A, where the more normal folks were. Sometimes they were so normal it was scary, and the only difference that was keeping them in the hospital was that they had tried to kill themselves. Yes, depressed, yes, schizoaffective, but no, not raving lunatics like I was expecting. I had thought it would be more like the movies present a psych ward - with people walking around muttering to themselves, claiming to be Jesus, or wearing tinfoil hats to protect them from the death rays of Venus.
Three of the other students went to B ward, where there were people who believed they were perfectly OK in running around naked and peeing on everything. The other students were jealous because we had a small karaoke machine on our ward and actually ran a karaoke night. It was pretty funny. Not many people wanted to sing, but I had fun with the ones who did.
On to new things - next quarter is mother/baby and peds. Not my favorite subject, but at least the LAST subject. Pinning is coming and folks are discussing ordering these pins from a school pin company. The cheapest one is about $35, and I just can't see paying that sort of money for a pin I'll probably never use. I used the same logic when it came to my high school ring and never bought one, and I certainly don't regret that. I'm not proud of what school I went to - I'm just happy to be out. My biggest reward will be a nice fat paycheck when I'm finally able to work full time again. And maybe an Escalade (used, of course) - hehehe. I found a pin on ebay that should work for me, and it's only $5. The staff will let us use whatever pin we like for pinning, and I think this will work just fine for me. It's the same size as the 'official looking' ones, but actually sort of neater in a way.
So thats about it right now. I've been hanging out on www.craigslist.org , for anyone who cares. You can usully find me in the Health and Healing forum.
